Judge Greg Mathis from the popular TV show, "Judge Mathis" speaks at the University of Southern California on fatherhood, his criminal past, challenges he faced after law school and how he became a judge in Detroit, Michigan.

We ask him about his previous crime and why he showed up at convicted murder's funeral, Stanley Tookie Williams, after he was executed by the State of California.

  • Judge Mathis is a very intelligent brother and honestly I think that he is living proof that those of us living in the hood and the ghettos of america can lift up and become SOMEBODY.... not just sellin drugs, robbing, stealing, and failin and ditchin school... Im only 20 years old and I grew up in South Central... The Jungles to be exact. I dont still live in the Jungles but im definetly not going to accept that type of area as a prison.... We gotta lift up as a people not just individuals..

  • really,how about the "Root"actually being that a centuries-long history of racism & discrimination has undermined the role & power of black millions of men to obtain a quality education & competitive jobs I understand where Pres.Obama is coming from though-he is clearly upset about his OWN father abandoning him.It is hard to understand though how his abandonment somehow translates into the problem being mainly a black{men} community one (which is patently untrue).Where are the JOBS for black men
