Despite what tons of people who have never tried Aikido and bad mouth it, and spend all their time watching these videos say, it is a very effective martial art on the street. The only thing is, it takes a long time to get to the level where you could use it. Something like Karate would show quicker results.

Dear @cjrllanosnj, your point makes me think there are fortunatly enough Budo to satisfy everyone according to his own motivations. Even if Aikido is efficient for many and various situations (most probably not all), it can be also a very good way for self improvement when it is part of the motivation. I would say Aikido is a long-term path that may deserve an entire life when practiced with hearth : root of budo is sharing among human beings.

@EricSavalli Every martial art is different and consequently every one of them have different applications for the art and for self defense. Aikido in the streets would be good when someone is attacking you with a baseball bat or a knife for example because aikido teaches you how to move and get out of the line of attack. I would like to see how a karateka blocks a knife attack without getting slashed). On the other hand karate is better for a one on one fist fight. MMA is a modern martial art

This is the exact point that is missed often by many.Does not matter what Jutsu,Waza or Ryu.If we get it in the precised atemi point with the speed and power. We are out cold,Dans,Menkyos,Denshos,UFC Belts,BJJ Belts are of no use. This brings the question are we in Zanshin and or Mushin all the Time or most of the time that permit us us do do Sennosen instead that Gonosen or be KO? THE REAL SKIL IS ON THE MIND POWER SOME SAID.

@pacosaidso ...I actually think that's very considerate to the training partner... their ukemi might suck, but they'll be totally relaxed the whole time... heh. Spock would be a bad-ass aikidoka.

This is aiki-ken and aiki-jo... technics with bokken and jo as teached in Iwama (Japan) by O-Sensei Ueshiba, founder of Aikido, who practiced by many weapon based jutsu and be inspired and genius enough to design a coherent & complet martial art system (so called Iwama Ryu Aikido by his closest student Saito Sensei not to mixed it with the "usual" aikido technics teached all over the world).
Many thanks to Saito Sensei and some of his students who managed to transmit the art.

I am thinking of getting into Aikido and just wanted to know 1: just curious does it contain any strikes? 2:How much time is spent on weapons training I have many Katana because I collect them and really want to learn how to use them, and the Jo staff.
