Darren Powell's 92nd minute goal for Palace at the Stadium of Light in the 2004 promotion season. This brought the score back to 2-1 in the second leg but as the aggregate score was 4-4, extra time was played. After the 30 minutes Palace won the penalty shooutout to progress to the Play-Off Final at the Millenium Stadium, Cardiff, which they won 1-0 to become a Premiership team

  • I watched it at Selhurst on the screen. I was getting ready to leave, but decided to stay to watch the corner. Had my head in my hands then looked up at the screen and saw Powell pop up, said 'It's in' and started screaming like a little girl. One of the best feelings I've ever experienced. Absolutely euphoric.

  • fucking love it. ah love it when something good actually happens for us!! we'll be back in a few years hopefully.

  • When I watched this on the TV, I cried, I was so overwhelmed and happy at what just happened

  • Shipperly fouled our keeper like. No doubt about it.

  • need the real commentary, this sucks!

  • Get in there!!... literally.

  • @cwscpfc We were nearly there! Id never seen Sunderland in a Final before and we were we so close. Wed talked about travel and everything and this went in and ive never felt so speechless, i just went numb in the stand watching the Palace fans going crazy. We got promoted automatically the next year anyway, came down and went back up again and weve been there 4/5 years now. The Play Offs arent for Sunderland. I still remember Charlton in 1998 :( hope you do stay in the Championship in future :)

  • @BackFromNowere We traded emotions with each other within the space of 2 seconds. The feeling before Powell popped up was horrible, we'd had luck for the last few games beforehand and it seemed like it had finally run out.

You've not done badly since compared to us. I like Steve Bruce even though he did us over when we were doing so well under him. Good luck to you too!

  • @cwscpfc By contrast as a 10 year old Sunderland supporter this was the worst feeling at the football ive ever felt. The only time ive ever cried at a game. Ill never forget the second my ecstasy was turned into complete heartache with this goal. I knew wed lose the shootout. Its exactly the Sunderland way, give the supporters a sniff of success then cruelly take it away in the last minute. Any time i meet a Palace fan i still moan that Shipperly fouled the keeper. :D anyway good luck.

  • @dipton95 fuck me you dont hold a grudge much! get over it! , you got a good team, a good manager( judas twat though) now.Your forgetting we were in the bottom 3 before dowie took over at xmas, and we stuffed you 3-0 at selhurst a few weeks earlier!

  • 2003/2004 season, division 1 (now called the championship) sunderland finished 3rd and palace finished 6th. sunderland were 6 points ahead of palace. this was a great example of showing the problems of the play-off system, as a clearly, statistically and deservedly better team weren't promoted, while 6th placed palace went to the play-off final, beat west ham united and were on their way to the premier league. fortunately for sunderland fans, they came straight back down
