Title: "To Make the End of Battle"
Composed/arranged by: Yuzo Koshiro & Falcom Sound Team jdk
Why this track?
- I couldn't help myself! (: I love the Falcom JDK Band and their ultra-80s cheeze, and this is probably THE single most well-known piece of music they've ever performed. And this particular version of it uses instrumentation totally unique to the anime, differing NOT AT ALL from the JDK Band's album version otherwise... and yet, the slightly different instrumentation really sets this version apart from its more official sibling, in a way I can't quite identify!
Why this ranking?
- Because this song is ALMOST cheating. (: It follows all my self-imposed rules, sure... but I know it best as a game track, even though I heard it first as an anime track (yep, watched the Ys anime LONG before I played the games!). As such, I immediately bumped it down to the bottom of the list. It very much deserves to be ON the list, but if I ranked it any higher than 25, I'd feel like I was doing something of a disservice to all the other tracks that were composed and arranged specifically for their respective anime titles, rather than adapted (barely) from the game those titles were based off of.

~ Wyrdwad's Top 25 Non-Vocal Anime BGM Themes ~
This list represents some of my favorite non-vocal anime background tracks of all time. In order to create a more diverse list, however, I'm going to be imposing a series of rules upon myself - stricter even than in my previous top 25 list (best video game overworld themes) - as I'd like to avoid selecting every entry from one single soundtrack, or one particular composer. As such, this list is not entirely representative of my favorite anime tracks of all time, just my favorite tracks within these established guidelines.
These are the rules:
- No more than one track per series. This includes second/third seasons, as well as TV/OVA simultaneous releases, but does NOT include remakes, nor wholly separate (but related) series created years apart from the originals. Some examples (from shows NOT featured on this list) include Rurouni Kenshin (I could NOT use a track from the Rurouni Kenshin TV series *and* a track from the Rurouni Kenshi OAVs, as one is very much meant to complement the other), and Bubblegum Crisis (I COULD use a track from the original Bubblegum Crisis OAV *and* a track from Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040, as they're two completely different shows made a full decade apart from one another, with different core staff members).
- No more than two tracks from the same composer.
- No full-on vocals, but voices used as instrumentation (i.e. humming, "la," "ooh," and "ah" sounds, random bits of speech, and/or nonsense/garbled singing that isn't meant to convey actual words) are acceptable.
- No opening or ending themes (not even instrumental ones!). Only BGM tracks used during the course of the show or movie may apply! BGM themes used as an opening or ending for only one episode are fine, as long as their primary usage within the anime is as background music, NOT as opening or ending themes.
- Each track on this list must have actually been played (in part or in full) during the course of the show or movie. "Image tracks" featured on the soundtrack that were never actually used in the anime, as well as remixed or arranged tracks, are completely disqualified, and will not show up on this list.
Pretty specific, no? I had to do that in order to narrow this list down to something reasonable. (: Hope you enjoy it!
