Not an engineer, but I challenge anyone hating on them to get off their butts and try to do half the things engineers have to do while not enjoying the benefits they have brought to their lives. Your very existence has brought about the standards they have to adhere to. They have to make ALL of us happy.

I thought the resident was the stupid one, but then at the end she was the one promoting a web site?

Then why isn't it titled that way? The tone of the dialog sure doesn't match what you say.

AASHTO is a guideline. Engineers can deviate when justified. That's why there is an experimental process to try out new things. The latest AASHTO guide reflects this.

"Your very existence has brought about the standards they have to adhere to. They have to make ALL of us happy."

Hardly. They have to make the AASHTO green book guidelines happy. The point of this video was not to bash engineers, but to question the operating system they are forced to follow. It's a policy question.

Engineer (translation): We are going to widen and straighten the street turning it into a road so cars can drive faster. We don't really care about the homes on this street. And one more thing we advice you not to walk around your neighborhood anymore and begin to use your car for all your errands.

Summary: City wants to build a commercial district at the end of the road, so they hired an engineer to improve the road to handle the forecast increase in traffic. After looking at the statistics and data, the engineer determines that the increase in traffic will necessitate changing the 25 mph, 2 lane, unmarked road into a 45 mph 4 lane marked road.

The road may be safe now, but it won't be so safe when 6000 people try to drive down it every single day.

As an engineer, I hate working with guys like this. All buzzwords and BS never actually making a point unless you force it out of him.
