Could it be that the European Volvos differ from US!!!!!! Because I had an 850 (1992) with Sips protection, And Later 850 (1995) also with Sips and side airbags, S80 (1999) with sips, whips, side airbgs and headairbags and at the moment s80 (2001) which also with sips, whips, side airbgs and headairbags

  • that is incorrect only 2000 year models and up have whiplash protection. you should be able to find it on your wind screen if you have a V70/S70 they did recieve increased SIPS in 1999 the side airbags were now taller for head protection.

  • @Transam941 no... u replace a small metal pice that absorbs the impact.

  • Sad news indeed with regard to Saab. The 9-5 is so production ready EuroNCAP released their evaluation yesterday yet it seems it will never go on sale. I was looking forward to the 9-5 and 9-4X, hopefully somebody buys the Saab name in the future (sooner rather than later) and makes these cars before they go out of date.

  • thank you for posting. but that means that the first v70 (1997)have also whips, because they are similar to s70 (s70 sedan. v70 est.) I thought that only s70 and v70 which produced after july 1999 have whips.

i've heard yestrday sad news, that saab will no more be produced!! gm has no money!

  • WHIPS was available in the S70 which was introduced in 1997, although Volvo's signature head restraint design was first available in the 850. Saab has a head restraint system called SAHRs which is similarly effective and which Saab claim is the worlds first 'active' head restraint, although only the restraint itself moves, not the seatback like WHIPS. No other manufacturer has a name for its side protection, but that necessarily doesn't mean they offer less protection.

  • no you do not have to replace it. this protection came for the first time by volvo s80 in 1998. no other carmanufacturer till now has this protection. sips protection is also since 1991 which came with volvo 850. till now has also no other car manufacturer this safety. volvo has the best unique safty systems.

  • wonder if you would have to replace the seat afterwards?
