De-mining in the North is being expedited to accelerate the resettlement of the liberated civilians.
The Government has imported advanced machinery for the removal of mines. These activities are taking place at the behest of the President. Head of the Uthuru Wasanthaya Task Force and Senior Presidential Advisor and Parliamentarian Basil Rajapaksa is playing a key role in this effort. He said the Presidents desire is to resettle the civilians in their villages soon. Various queries are being made on this effort. But is should be noted how difficult the task is.
Five de-mining machines were imported from Croatia at a cost of 270 million rupees. These are being operated with a remote control. Each machine can clear 5000 square metres per day. The Army Engineering Force is carrying out the de-mining process. Five such machines were also purchased from Slovakia. These have been deployed in the Yodawewa area in Mannar. The de-mining process is underway in the Vavuniya, Jaffna and Mannar areas.
In the meantime, Australia recently handed over some equipment for the removal of mines. The handing over of this equipment to Basil Rajapaksa took place at the Presidential Secretariat.
