  • One of my favorites! My Great Grandfather was there with Co. E (Dixie Rifles), 13th Tennessee Infantry Regiment who captured Waterhouse's Battery (Co. E., 1rst Illinois Light Artillery). The words were written by M.G. Smith of Co. C, 2nd Regiment Texas Volunteer who applied them to "The Wandering Sailor." Yankees often change the words to make it "their" song. However, the horrors of this brutal disorganized fistfight, as Shelby Foote aptly described it, were experienced by both sides.

  • Isn't this believed to be the bloodiest battle of the Civil War? o-o Sadly, I don't think I have any ancestors involved in this battle.

  • Simply marvellous... America had wonderful folk music back then!

  • Song was also done by Jim Taylor and can be downloaded.

  • @TennesseeShine Well said, probably the most telling of the horrors of war.

  • My ggg grandfather somehow survived this battle in the 11th Louisiana Infantry Battalion Co. B. I read his company and others were so decimated they later formed the Consolidated Infantry in which my ggg grandfather was in Company F. Pvt. Francis M. Bolton, buried at Mora Baptist Church, Louisiana.

  • God bless the Union and Confederacy. They men and women on both sides were of the United States of America. This war as a whole brought us closer and the bond between the states became strong enough to make it the United States is, not the United States are. Before hate is spouted between northerers and southerners, remember, this was one of the worst wars, if not the worst, in american history.

  • God blees the souls that were killed that day

  • @Novaius Look up on google: youtube to mp3 file converter, it will rip the audio track and create an mp3 that you can download for free. There are free versions out there. Thank you for your service!

  • Haunting song. I had ancestors in that war also, both union and confederate who fought for what they believed in and I couldn't be more proud of them.

  • @Wildernessgirl94 opinion
