I'm not American.. but that's a little exaggerated The US has some very safe areas. Kabukicho is shady.. Tokyo overall though is the safest city I've ever been to.

Oh I am exaggerating. That is something I tell parents who are worried about their children traveling to Japan.
I am an American, and I can tell you, the knowledge that anyone anywhere in the US could be armed with a gun is more frightening to me than any of the rowdy posers in Shinjuku. I saw (and got dragged into) a pretty nasty Hanami brawl near Tokyo Tower once. Police, broken bottles, crazy stuff. It was violent, but I was never worried someone would start shooting.
