Sourwood Mountain on my fretless banjo. aEAC#E This is from John Burke's book of Old-Time Fiddle Tunes for Banjo, a book that is no longer in print for some odd reason. This book is a great resource for any intermediate player who wants some challenging advanced songs to learn on the banjo. It's mostly transcriptions of early recordings of banjo and fiddle tunes and songs from artist such as Wade Ward, Hobart Smith, Kyle Creed, Art Rosenbaum, Glen Smith,Charlie Poole, Pete Seeger, Eck Robertson and many others. I started off with the easiest song of the book which happens to be based on Wade Wards playing of Sourwood Mountain. John Burke states in the introduction that the book is for advanced players only and he is certainly right. Except for a handfull of songs, most of them are very challenging. I paid a lot of money for this book considering that it's a rare book but I feel that it was worth the investment.

  • Someone gave me that book, it's wonderful. I'm coming to believe even sourwood mtn is to advanced for me right now. great tune!

  • I would stay away from that book. I've been playing for several years and it's still very hard.

  • Fantastic!! How is it playing on a fretless compared to fretted? I play a fretted but I imagine the fretless is somewhat more challenging

  • thanks! I just found this book through my school's library and have been trying to get this tune down, Very helpful! Maybe you can do some more renditions of the tunes in Burke's book...

  • The books works quite well if you know the tunes. Otherwise the rather idiosyncratic tablature may throw you off. His timing is a bit of a challenge. But if you know the tunes, his versions are a lot of fun.

  • great

  • very nice! I l love the greasy sliding - it gives a very anglo- tune a bluesy overtone.

  • Sounding good,brother..like that banjo too
