Before invading Poland, Germany signed the Nazi-Soviet Nonaggression Pact, securing the eastern border of Germany. Limited trade, mostly on the part of the Russians, was part of the agreement. But everyone involved knew that it was a measure on both sides to buy time. Ideologically, both nations despised the other. Hitler had devoted much of Mein Kampf to his believe in the menace of Communism. Nazism was against everything Communism stood for.

Part of the operational planning of the German high command involved a possible invasion of the Soviet Union. On July 21, a month after the fall of France, Hitler summoned Generalfeldmarshal Walther von Brauchitsch and instructed him to plan for an invasion of the Soviet Union

@Spindry96 I think liberating Russia from communism was the last thing on Hitler's mind. It was a war of conquest. Suggestions to that end were put down by Hitler himself who pointed out that the aim was to use the land there for his own needs and not to free anyone from Stalinism which at the end of the day was a very similar ideology to his own.

Trying to buy the Germans off sent Sudakofof to 15 years in prison for treason. If you look at history, ie. Roman Army. General Stilico did exactley the same and he was executed on the spot. We have a connection & my point being, it did'nt work 2000 years ago, it did'nt work 73 years ago. WHAT THE HELL DO WE GO TO FOR? The answer....DEATH! Work it out!

@alanheath Of course. Why was Hitler the best politician ever? Because he was one big llayer. Of course he said: Were going to free them from communism..Why? To motivate troops that they are helping, to get support from the Russians.

amazing those pow's didnt just revolt, by the looks of the footage there was enough of them to overpower the guards or at least try, i know easy for me to say all these years later having never suffered a war etc its upsetting to see people treated this way, perhaps more upsetting to watch them let it happen

This is the best documentary on the Eastern Front. Before watching this I thought John Wayne and the Flying Tigers won this war. 4 out of 5 Germans were killed on the Eastern Front, no John Wayne...he came later.
