During the New Years holiday, I was at Hamarikyu Garden in east Tokyo to look at Japanese falconry when I came across a brief demonstration of Aikido. Aikido is as many people know a Japanese martial arts which is about redirecting an attacker's energy and neutralizing them without causing them physical injury.

Though it doesn't look like it, it was freaking cold being January 3rd!

  • @professorthumbscrew Or you could try Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu. It is a Japanese Martial arts organisation which has 9 Ryu's (schools), 3 arts of which are Ninjutsu, and 6 arts of which are Samurai

  • @professorthumbscrew I would say Krav Maga, as it is suited to modern day standards. It is used by elite military forces around the world such as the French Foreign Legion, the Israeli Defence Force and more. It is more effective

  • @matroid10 Nice. How did you get into sankyo from knife? I put a guy in sankyo when he tried to do sleeper hold on me from behind. Could have swung his arm down to the ground like a sword motion, or broken the wrist, but let him go, because i thought he was my cuzin. he was not lol.

  • What is better to learn? Krav maga of Aikido?

  • @HiFiReviewer You mean when it is NOT extended? nikkyo, sankyo, yonkyo, irimi nage, etc. Really depends on what the attacker is giving you.

  • Agree with matroid10 - I've been practicing for 12 years and what attracted me is that it is a very scalable defense. It can go from a simple "push away", to "knock down with a thump" to "now you're knocked down and your arm is broken" with the option (if the guy/gal is really not getting the message) of "and now you're dead". I've only been assaulted once, luckily, and was able to hold the guy on the bus floor until the driver could stop and get police on board.

  • i have taken aikido for 7 years and although it may seem harmonious, it is devestating. I was once attacked by a guy with a knife. I broke his wrist with sankyo.

  • I am going to start taking lessons on this this is beautiful

  • What would Aikido do if the guy's arm is for exstended....

  • this is a very gentle tecnique, but in other tecniques aikido has to be taken with more precaution even more than ju jitsu, for example nikyo
