The footage was filmed in the early morning on Sunday, 9/27/09 at the arena in A.J. Arizona.

Rio is not my horse, but I've ridden him a few times (or should I say, he's taken me for a few rides?). As is the case with my own horse, Rio also is an adopted Mustang. He's quite large for a "Mustang," and very muscular. He's only about 4 years old, very intelligent, and eager to be worked with....

With the exception of the last time I rode him in the arena (that would have been on 8/5/09), he's always tried to throw me or buck me off--although, to his credit and my great relief, he's never really tried all that hard to throw me!

This time is really no exception. Notice that the fault is all mine: first, I'm riding a horse who lacks adequate "ground work." He should really be thoroughly reacquainted with the basic expectations of being led and submitting to his handler (notice his lack of cooperation during the mount). Secondly, I should have been much more patient by allowing him to just walk around with me and by letting him remain in close proximity to his fellow horses; instead, I gave him two smacks on the rump to get him to move for me--which he did do! I should not have tried to "cue" him with smacks to the rump; I should have relied on leg and voice cues. Thirdly, I was not in a good position or state of preparedness when I did smack his rump. I probably should have held the reins in such a way that i could have quickly slid down the right or left rein to bring his nose around immediately if I sensed trouble.

Nevertheless, notice that Rio doesn't try to hurt me in any way; he just wants me off his back.

What you don't see here is that I mounted up again about ten minutes after he bucked me off. My back was hurting, and the stiffness must certainly have been transmitted from me to him. We only walked around a bit, and he was fine. I dismounted to get my camera, and when I mounted again, well, he threw me off again--right on my butt! But that time it didn't even hurt.

After that, Uncle Tom decided to work him a bit in the round-pen. And I sat down and began to luxuriate in the on-setting awareness of what I'd done to my body. By the time we got back to Uncle Tom's house and watched the video with Tammy a few times, the pain and immobility was beginning to become apparent to me. I couldn't even get off the couch without assistance by late afternoon.

But this morning (9/28/09), which is the next day, I'm doing much better! I had no problem getting out of bed this morning and going to work!

I can't wait to get back in the saddle atop Rio! I'll remember to be more patient with him.

Did I mention that this was the first time I've been thrown off a horse? It's pretty exhilarating!
