  • Entschuldigung! Ich meinte op.2 no.1 nicht op.1 no.2.

  • Furthermore, even though the three sonatas of op. 2 smell heavily of the influence of Haydn's breath as the early Mozart symphonies do of Leopold, Beethoven emerges a thousandfold more confidently as a musical force and personality.

  • If one took the Beethoven Sonatas for piano, for instance, one could see that even with op.1 no.2, the first sonata that a distinct musical style was born that evolved into Beethoven the Great. Whereas with the early Mozart Symphonies nothing appears to be what would later be Mozart's innovative musical personality. They seem to be even more than 3/4ths Leopold's!

  • Exactly. I believe I read (in Solomon's Mozart biography) that Leopold admitted to helping Mozart with his early symphonies. I believe Leopold tried to play down his involvement, but it definitely was more than a few note corrections. A lot of those early Wolfgang works really do have the Leopold character. Leopold was a brilliant composer. His music is refined and stately. It's a shame that he has been so overshadowed by the output of his son.

  • yeah listen to Mozart's Symphony no.1 and tell me thats not mostly Leopold's work!

  • Oh, I must add that these symphonies are sublime. I wouldn't be surprised if some of Mozart's very early work (Wolfgang's) is more than 1/4 Leopold's help.

  • I once lent this CD to my violin teacher, and he heard something astounding. Listen closely to the French Horn trills that begin after 0:15 - they turn into something that sounds like a voice choir in the background. It's rather amazing. It doesn't sound anything like horns anymore. It sounds like voices singing in harmony with the strings. It's quite amazing. Please listen to this amazing quality in the music! It's so unique, I've never heard anything like that with no choir present.
