This video shows the harvesting of a block graft from the symphysis area of the chin. There is quite a bit of cross talk during the surgery, because this was a C.E. course demo surgery with residents inside the OR. As always, this video is intended for professional audiences, and is quite a bit graphic.

  • Dr. Gougaloof....sorry I mispelled your name, but I thought it would be appropriate since you mispelled symphysis. Try using a bone saw, you may actually be able to harvest a usable graft.

  • We all have bad days :)...no need to insult everyone, however on a more technical note, bone saws are so out of date...check out piezo surgery or maybe even ErYAG surgery (that's a laser !!)

  • Two things : 1- Where's ur mental nerve? shouldn't u expose it and protect it before doing the harvest?

2- Y closing the donor site before the grafting site? maybe u need more bone?

just a modest comment from a maxillofacial surgeon :)

  • Is this because the bone from your own chin is far superior to other sources, animal for example?

  • Maybe a trephine bur?

  • Never have this procedure, i had it done, got guarantee's that noone will be able to tell bone had been removed, yet on every photograph i can tell and in my own mind my body knows something is missing, i've been depressed ever since, why do dentists do this? Patients come to have one area of their face corrected (their smile) they don't want another area deformed beyond repair for this to happen.

  • Hi, Well well Dr that was interesting....... but you put collagen into the site after removal of the graft. Why? for regenerating the bone which you have removed ?! then you could have put the same amount of collagen at the recipient site, wouldn't it regenerate. Don't you think this is much more invasive.

  • He was awake ? This is all very interesting. What is that powder used for? I wonder what the pain is like when there is no anesthesia.

  • @allergic2stupidshit3

Just wanted to let you know that you misspelled the word "mispelled. "

  • anyone who plans on having this procedure DON'T DO IT....

i was told it would involve a 1 inch cut in my lower jaw, when in fact this is what actually happens, and the discomfort and nerve damage hasn't repaired after 10 YEARS

  • Oh YUCK!

My bf had a bone graft op on Monday. Poor thing, glad he didn't see this before cos he can't even look at it...urgh.

  • aww dentists arguing... how cute
