I attended the Nishikigoi of Niigata koi harvest in Richmond, Virginia late November of last year. A hurricane off the coast sent some heavy rain and wind our way on days 1 and 2. It was also quite cool. But everyone still had a great time. On the first day, 2 year olds were harvested from pond 1. We saw some great kohaku, sanke and chagoi, among others.

  • What I always wonder , what do they put in the water and do they filter the water ?

  • @SkyZero02 The ponds fill up with rain water. The water is not filtered. There is so much water that filtration is not required for mud ponds.

  • @jaggedmoss And what if it doesn't rain enough and what do they eat ?

  • @SkyZero02 If not enough rain, the ponds get filled with well water. They are feed koi pellets. High protein mix I presume.

  • @SuperQuickStick They aren't happy probably. >Check your water quality.

  • @SuperQuickStick Generally Ray invites his clients to this event. If you are really keen you could contact Ray, see what he says I guess.

  • @SuperQuickStick This koi harvest at Nishikigoi of Niigata is by invite only.

  • @SuperQuickStick Not too many people have mud ponds. I'm not familiar with any in CA.

  • @SuperQuickStick Hard to say what has happened... How well do you know the dealers and their koi? That is the question really... Maybe the koi that died just didn't adapt well the the change in water quality. Who knows?
