Anna Han, age 10, performed Jeux d'eau by Maurice Ravel at the winner's recital of the 2006 Arizona Young Artist Piano Competition in Arizona State University.
Jeux d'eau (Playing Water) was written by impressionistic composer Maurice Ravel around the time he was dismissed from being an official student in Gabriel Faure's composition class at the Paris Conservatoire. However, he remained an auditor and friend of Faure's and dedicated this piece to him. In Jeux d'eau, Ravel takes us on a brilliant whirlwind of impressionistic sounds and fresh colors to emulate the "sprays of water, the waterfalls, and the brooks." (Ravel) This work's shimmering textures and impressive harmony of water hints at some of Ravel's later masterpieces, including Gaspard de la Nuit and Miroirs.
The music's preface: "Dieu fluvial riant de l'eau qui le chatouille" (The river god laughs at the water as it tickles him), from a poem by Henri de Régnier.
She plays with wonderful spontaneity! Great balances, colors, technique, and musicality! Such an inspired rendition! Bravo!
