UPDATE: 'We Are The Future' was originally created for an industry conference and as a promotional video to stimulate discussion within the marketing industry.

It aimed to made projections on what the media landscape could be like in ten years based on what we are seeing now.

It has since reached a much wider audience and created a mixed reaction which has largely been negative.

In retrospect we would have approached this very differently and accept that we got it wrong on this occasion, particularly in getting young people to voice it. We apologise to anyone who did not like it.

We believe people have the right to debate the video and its contents so will be leaving it on YouTube to allow that and we welcome comments.

However any grossly obscene comments will not be tolerated and will be removed.

  • Why the controversy? The phrasing is all future tense (i.e. that reference to the iPhone of 2021). They're talking about the consumers that these children will grow up to be, not who they are now. Moreover, you romanticize "the novelty and wonder" of childhood all you want, but in most developed countries that usually means pestering your parents for expensive stuff you don't really need. The video just says that running an advert during Saturday morning cartoons doesn't sell a product anymore.

  • I looked into their eyes, and there is no one in there.

  • "Mass blocks kill brands overnight" What's a mass block...?

  • Well, i believe the video is directed to professionals of a specific area (marketing/advertising) and for anyone of that media, it's amazing. It's just sad that so many people misunderstood the message, but the phrasing, monotone voice and just about everything in it is really, really good.

It's just about how the market will be ten years from now, what people will expect. And it's really good at predicting that.

  • ..wtf?

  • chilling.

  • please John Connor, save us from these Humanoids. NOW!!

  • Wow... I don't think it's a stretch to suggest that the down-votes are from old-worlders who can't wrap their head around the message. This video relates to my personal views on marketing and reach, and as such has sparked a fire under my ass to write about it, both on my personal and professional blogs.

Anyone watching this video who isn't prepared to change how they market aught to get out of the business. Straight up. Adapt or die - that at least should be familiar to the old-world thinkers.
