Obama: Head Starts Won't Automatically Get Funding

we do everything from health services...transportation (nats-wheels on the bus)...nutrition...as well as the children in the classroom.GAIL
THAT'S GAIL EVANS...SHE OVERSEES ANNA WATERS HEAD START.
JUST THIS WEEK PRESIDENT OBAMA TOLD HEAD START PROGRAMS ACROSS THE COUNTRY...THEY'LL NEED TO MEASURE UP...TO KEEP THEIR FEDERAL FUNDING.
(obama) if kids aren't learning what they need to learn, we're not going to put money into programs that don't work...we're going to put money into programs that do.
THAT MEANS ANNA WATERS...WILL HAVE TO FOCUS MORE ON GETTING KIDS READY FOR SCHOOL...AND PARENTAL ENGAGEMENT AMONG OTHER CRITERIA. EVANS SAYS COMPETITION COULD ACTUALLY HELP THE KIDS.
i think some of the changes would help us focus our program better. to get more into that school readiness.
BUT IF THE SCHOOL FAILS TO SHOW IT'S MEETING STANDARDS...THEY COULD LOSE THEIR FEDERAL GRANT MONEY.
evans says she's not sure how obama's enforcement will affect the close to 400 children served here at anna waters head start but she says there could be a loss of service in the community.
SHE SAYS IT'S ALMOST INEVITABLE SOME OF THESE KIDS WOULDN'T HAVE ACCESS TO A PRE-SCHOOL DURING A TRANSITION TO A NON-HEAD START PROGRAM. BUT...
i feel confident that we can compete. i'm not going to say we gonna win, but i feel like we can compete.
