This 1976 video follows founding members of Greenpeace as they try to stop the barbaric Canadian Harp Seal slaughter off Newfoundland. This video illustrates the collusion of the Canadian Government with Norwegian fur trade interests. The Norwegians have also been big players in the whaling industry and in the extermination of the cod stocks and more recently are playing a huge part in ravaging British Columbia's Wild Coastal Salmon runs with their Norwegian owned open net fish farms.

  • So sad it is still going on.Remember,15th March 5 min of silence in protest against the sealhunt !!!

  • I agree. I it was films like this that Greenpeace brought to my Jr. High School in 1983 that illustrated the poor judgment abilities and the sick twisted minds of the Canadian Sealer to me and turned me into the warrior for the lives of the voiceless that I am today.

  • Funny, they were worried about extinction back in the 1970’s and they still are today. They were killing them back then and they are still killing them today so I would say that discredits the idea that the hunt will force them into extinction.

  • Rare and interesting video. Thanks for posting. Never seen or heard a white coat killed because it was outlawed in the 1980's. You'd think that footage would be in every teenie-bopper video since they show pictures of the white coats before the pictures of the dead, older seals. Again, interesting.

  • In addition to supporting commercial seal hunting, almost 85% of Canadians accept that seals can be hunted to maintain a balance and protect fish stocks.

This acceptance of seal hunting has emerged despite the fact that very few Canadians realize how dramatically the harp seal population has INCREASED since the early 1980’s – from about 2.8 million to 6.9 million today.

  • "almost 85% of Canadians accept that seals can be hunted to maintain a balance and protect fish stocks"

  • I can kill you sealslaugther you scum of earth

  • lol

  • Thanks for posting this video ... I haven't seen it before. Heartbreaking !!!

  • I was a teenager in 1976 and will never forget this video. Thirty years later I can't believe we still fight this ignorance. This slaughter has nothing to do with subsistence. NFLD has received government subsidies all along, and is now a "have" province. International and INTERNAL opposition has meant nothing to Canadian government for 30 years. They have legislated DISTANCE for observers - those troublemakers. Paul Watson has set a good example to us if we want an end to utter cruelty.
