  • helmets are not as safe as they make them out to be, teaching someone how to ride safely is far more valuable

  • @mathematicalinfinity seatbelts are pretty proven. Years of studies and physical tests. Helmet data has largely relied upon anecdotal evidence from busy doctors, the helmets themselves have undergone very little in the way of physical testing... certainly with things like accelerometers and such.

We also know from crash test dummies that seatbelts stop the inside of a car from becoming a blender. Cyclists dont pose a risk to others in impact. Or very little.

    Interesting comment :-)

  • as a dutch bicycle rider I find this ridiculous. But maybe that's because riding a bike in holland is safe. very very safe. (our infrastructure is designed for bikes not cars)

  • helmets look big and ulge but they will save your lif. i wear a helmet all the time

  • And finally as I already said, not every kind of death can be prevented, but we should try to make life as safe as possible and at least get rid of the preventable risks :)

  • And coming to the car thing: I don't know if you do, but I personally do wear a selt belt. Even if I crash somewhere with more than 100 miles per hour I am first of all having a seat belt, than I am kinda smashed against the air bag that in return smashes me back in my seat and against the "headrest" (I don't know what you call tha in Egnlish) which prevents bad head injuries.

  • There are vaccinations against flus and other serious deseases. If I'm going to be poisioned what I don't think happens to often *lol* well that's life :(

  • @CaneFu: First of all not every risk of death can be prevented unfortunately, but the ones that can be prevented should be prevented.

I'm not going to be killed by a horse. I mean if I am riding a horse I am wearing a helme as well + if I'm not riding a horse I usually don't approach it so that it can smash my body into pieces what is actually quite uncommen.

  • @mathematicalinfinity

The evidence clearly proves that for the average bicyclist, he is no more at risk for injury than if he was WALKING. So why don't you wear a helmet when you go for a walk? Clearly you should wear a helmet when you drive a car as 90% of automobile accident fatalities are caused by HEAD INJURIES, many of which could have been prevented by wearing a helmet!!! Why aren't you wearing a helmet every time you get in a car - what's the matter with you for not doing so???

  • @mathematicalinfinity

You have fallen for all the hype. Here are the FACTS:

You are nearly twice as likely to be killed by a horse, six times more likely to drown, 100 times more likely to die of pneumonia or the flu, than to be killed while riding a bicycle. More than twice as likely to be seriously injured in a car, and four times as likely to be poisoned, than seriously injured on a bicycle. And keep in mind, according to the CDC, only a third of those bicycle injuries are head injuries.
