This tutorial shows you how to get the pumping effect on pads. using side chain compression in Logic, although it works the same for other DAWs. You here this a lot in dance, trance, house, pretty much any dance music. Here are the steps in short:

1. Create a pad track with notes or chords.
2. Create a kick track with notes on the down beat/quarter notes/1, 2, 3, 4
3. Change output of kick to a bus (Bus 14 in example)
4. Add compression to your pad track.
5. Change the side chain on the compression to the bus used earlier (Bus 14 in the example)
6. Change RMS to Peak in the compression. Mess around with the attack and release to get the timing right. Also you can change the threshold and gain settings to taste.

If you have any question let me know.

  • this wasnt at all what i was looking to do but now im gunna do it thanks

  • why does my sidechain turn off when i click on a diffrent track??

  • @dojodin lol....

  • @dojodin I dont like the bassline (as its too resonant and acidy) with percussion I think you need to spend more time,(try adding some tops from sample packs maybe?),track cld be better is all* u just need good quality samples, also if ur compressing all ur drums thats not a good idea, They sound less prenounced ( I still like sidechaining the closed hats to go along with basslines,) The velocity on ur pads are all over the place,(midi) & *tip=automate ur compression ratio, Works great!=)

  • thx

    simply and directly

now i can dance in my own music

  • concise and to the point. great!
