Gunga Din

Wrote this one around 1980 - Rudyard Kipling could be spinning in his grave ;-)

Sitting in a bar on the west side of the city
found me a gal and ooh was that chick pretty
I gave her all the lines direct from a Shakespeare play
but she said that Romeo stuff ain't gonna work today
Well she looked me up and down and she saw me coming
then she turned around and she started running
and if you can do better you're a better man than I am Gunga Din
Trying for a job as a DJ on the radio
a wise man said it's not what you learn but who you know
The Station boss didn't seem to take to me at all
so we had a few words and I headed for the exit down the hall
Well he looked at me and he was red in the face
he said Sonny boy you're out of the race
and if you can do better you're a better man than I am Gunga Din
I'd like to write a song good enough to take the world by storm
and make so much money I could buy myself a palace for a home
But you can dream your life away and you'll never seem to make the grade
'cause it takes more than dreams alone before you reach the Hit Parade
They're turning me down but I'll keep on coming
someday my songs all the world will be humming
and if you can do better you're a better man than I am Gunga Din
