Learned with Lin Dazhao. First of 4 short staff patterns. Attributed to Bodhidharma (?), the 28th successor of Buddha, 1st patriarch of Zen Budhhism and martial arts. Many technics are common with broad sword.

  • It is very much like the broad sword

  • You are very perspicacious. Since monks was supposed not to use swords, they hide sword techniques in these staff patterns.

  • is this supposed to be chinese?

i wouldnt say its attributed to bodhidharma, just named after him.

  • I agree, nothing to do with Bodidharma. And it's very chineese ! Example : the politic book "Guan Zhong" has nothing to do with its presumed author : the events related occurred many years after his death. Besides, I would like to translate into french a Bodidharma's book (Guan Sin Fa) : 2/3 of its is surely not written by the Patriarch. The rest, we don't know !

  • @nghoaivan2 wrong... the name has a lot of sense, because Bodhidharma was a hindu prince from Tamil Nadu and practiced indian martial arts like silambam (millenary martial art with sticks of South India) If you don't believe me just search silambam here in you tube... it's a typical martial art of Bodhidharma's motherland... and has THOUSAND of years (surely before buddhism)... Namaste

  • @SatPurusha : Thank you for these informations. I meaned that in classic chineese Buddhist litterature, there is any trace of Bodhi Dharma practicing martial arts. However, the martial art's commubity used to consider him as their firt patriarch. It's an enigma for me. I will look for silambam videos ...

  • This has poissible connections to Silabum, an Indian Staff Fighting style, Very good. Like it, interesting. Amatofu

  • It's nice. Strong Karate flavor. If we want to see the essence of how Da Mo might have perfomed, let's look at Silambam martial arts of Southern India, also Kalaripayattu.

  • 1st and 2nd kicks are indeed not very "chineese". Just take the idea : medium or low plunging kick then staff attack (with its point or horizontally) on the face : not very Buddhist either :-)

  • well done not bad man

when it is chines , why did you kick like in karate or taekwondo?
