The Crusaders were one of the pioneers of Jazz-Funk music in the seventies and have made a number of visits to Montreux over the years. Founder members Joe Sample and Wilton Felder were joined in the line-up by long-standing friend Ray Parker Jr. on guitar and by the inimitable Randy Crawford on vocals. They delivered a set that spanned their career from early days up to their latest album capped with a stunning nine minute plus performance of their classic "Street Life".

Wilton has a killer fat tone on that tenor, and Joe makes the Wurly sound as jazz as any Rhodes

Thank you for posting this clip. Carnival of the Night is my favorite song out of the Street Life album (Everybody loves Street Life). This is just pure jazz gold to me.

@Jamminn555 i couldnt have described it better. the way they stretch out a beat at various points of the song just before its off beat its amazing. everybody just feels the music.

And listen to how far behind the beat the sax and trombone are on the main melody (and EXACTLY together), especially on the last run through it after the keyboard solo at 7:35, stretching out that pocket into pure sickness and magic.

Joe Sample on keyboards just kills it. SO funky, so tasteful, such a great leader on stage.
And yes, that's Ray Parker Jr. of "Ghostbusters" fame on guitar, being very respectful and playing so beautifully.
the bassist is just STUPID funky - restrained and so deep in that pocket. And he's watching so carefully, beautifully supporting and driving whatever's happening without getting in the way.
And the young trombonist is so fantastic.
