A frame of a one story "house," which hangs 6 inches above the floor via airplane cable in the Barn in the art building at Bard College. May 2007.

Kerry Wessell

I apologize for the poor documentation. The camera wasn't in my hands (nor is this an edited video--primarily because I prefer "rawness," if you will); however if you want the good stuff go to the last two minutes or so. Just watch the house slowly sway back and forth.

  • ok what's the point

  • To get you to ask that question.

  • It's interesting how much more difficult walking seems to be with two people; as opposed to one. - Might serve as the... framework for a "Zombie Ride" for kids' Halloween. ;-) - "The Lurch!" - lol

  • Yeah, walking became really awkward with 2 people. I thought it was an interesting experience anyway. Thanks for the comment!

  • I'm curious if the structure was hanging from a point, a series of poiints, or... The motion makes me suspect it was suspended by 4 points. (?) - btw, thanks for taking the time to film and upload this.

  • it was actually suspended from 9 points (if i remember correctly). each corner, and then one in between each corner and then one in the middle. I built all of this stuff on a very limited budget, so in short, the carpentry on them is ridiculous at times. Because of that, I needed to suspend it from more points. I mean, really, the frame for the floor should have been made out of (at least) 16 and 12 foot 2x6s. and you're very welcome!

  • Good point about the floor. - btw, as you guys walked around and used the studs for support, I was surprised they were as rigid as they were; especially considering that there was no lateral framing at the top. - Interesting experiment. Thanks for posting!
