Vielen Dank, Gregory

(Say, that was pretty good for someone who doesn't speak a word of German, wasn't it!? Thank you, BabelFish!).

  • For the record,Russ died in 1934-age 26-in a shooting accident at the hand of his best friend, photographer Lansing Brown, whom an inquest exonerated, ruling the shooting an accident. Russ's final home is on Outpost Circle in Hollywood. He was involved in a serious romance with Carole Lombard at the time of his death. January 14, 2008 marks the centenary of Russ's birth.Check out my RC YahooGroup--go to Yahoogroups & type "russcolumbo" in the search box(YouTube doesn't allow urls). Thanks, Greg

  • I hope it can stay, too. I put it up there a couple months ago and, frankly, I'm amazed it's lasted this long in the very ephemeral world that is YouTube (grrrr....). Glad you enjoyed it...it's pretty amazing footage... Greg

  • Russ is in the middle of the opening section...the picture in the "screen cap" by YouTube randomly (?) picked another scene where he is on the end. Russ was actually a child prodigy violinist who began his career at the age of 12, performing on the vaudeville circuit in the San Francisco Bay Area. His lengthiest, flashiest recorded violin solo with the Arnheim orchestra is from their 1929 recording of "Singin' in the Rain"...Russ gets a whole chorus to shine in. Glad you all enjoy this clip...

  • Thankyou This is the best footage of young Russ playing violin with the Arnheim band before he made it big on radio and the movies!

He appears much more briefly in my vid of Ken Murray singing Marvelous, another 1929 talkie bit of Gus Arnheims band, so this is a real pleasure to see him showcased so well! Thanks for sharing this fantastic Columbo gem!!

  • i used to work in a adult family home and one of the residents left a Russ Columbo LP behind and just for the heck of it i gave it a spin ,,not bad i glad because he was a great vocalist in the jacket it told of his untimely death what a tragic end but music lives on ...

  • WOW ---- thank you for posting this classic! It shows Russ's singing and vioin playing.

  • Beautiful!

  • I don't think so........

  • You are confusing Russ Columbo with Ramon Navarro. Navarro lived in Laurel Canyon and was gay. Columbo lived elsewhere and chased and was chased by many women including a Miss Universe, Dorothy Dell, Hannah Williams and Carole Lombard. He also dated

Lupe Velez who was a spit fire and a ball buster. Hardly "beards."

  • I'm 40 and I think it's "the bee's knees"!!!

  • And to think people now know it only as the place Robert Kennedy was killed. Sad, indeed.
