Reading from Isaiah 64:8-12 "Yet, O LORD, thou art our Father; we are the clay, and thou art our potter; we are all the work of thy hand. Be not exceedingly angry, O LORD, and remember not iniquity for ever. Behold, consider, we are all thy people. Thy holy cities have become a wilderness, Zion has become a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation. Our holy and beautiful house, where our fathers praised thee, has been burned by fire, and all our pleasant places have become ruins. Wilt thou restrain thyself at these things, O LORD? Wilt thou keep silent, and afflict us sorely?"

Job 10:9 "Remember that thou hast made me of clay; and wilt thou turn me to dust again?"

Note that the original Hebrew word that is translated as "dust" that Adam was created from, actually means clay, making God the first "potter". God's Word is very clear that God is the potter and we are the clay. The Biblical symbol of the potter and the clay when applied to man, makes several references to man as created by God.

The Bible is filled with illustrations of the potter, let me share a few more with you....

In our scripture today Jeremiah had been to the potter's house... Jeremiah chapter 18 verse 1-7 in the Old Testament which is the theme of this message: "This is the word the LORD spoke to Jeremiah: 2 "Go down to the potter's house, and I will give you my message there." 3 So I went down to the potter's house and saw him working at the potter's wheel. 4 He was using his hands to make a pot from clay, but something went wrong with it. So he used that clay to make another pot the way he wanted it to be. 5 Then the LORD spoke his word to me: 6 "Family of Israel, can't I do the same thing with you?" says the LORD. "You are in my hands like the clay in the potter's hands.

Turn to II Timothy 2:20-21 In a large house there are not only things made of gold and silver, but also things made of wood and clay. Some things are used for special purposes, and others are made for ordinary jobs. 21 All who make themselves clean from evil will be used for special purposes. They will be made holy, useful to the Master, ready to do any good work.

Romans 9:21 verifes that by saying "The potter can make anything he wants to make. He can use the same clay to make one thing for special use and another thing for daily use." NCV

  • By taking a lump of ugly clay, the potter shapes and forms it into a lovely work of art. At some point it may fall, and often

does, but he takes up again into his loving hands and starts the process all over again. That is me and you. We are the pots or the vessels in God's hands. Something goes wrong and we fall... we sin... but God is faithul to pick up the pieces and start again.

  • Thanks for sharing this with us. I pray that we all realize that we must surrender to God's will not our own for we are the clay and He (God) is the Potter.
