What started as a protest of the Suharto regime, became a widespread riot in Jakarta and its surroundings (also followed by other cities such as Medan and Solo). Like many riots in Indonesia, it became an anti-Chinese riot, and, just like many of those riots, the people and the government have always been in denial to admit as such were anti-Chinese riots.
