The common heliotrope, or heliotropium arborescens, are plants that are easy to grow because they can handle a little bit of cold temperatures. Grow the common heliotrope in a good, fertile soil that has good drainage with instructions from a sustainable gardener in this free video on gardening and plant care.

  • Thanks Alberta for the comment. Zone 9 on the West Coast is temperatures down to 20 to 30 degrees so if mulched well thay can handle a short freeze. When you google heliotrope zones will show anywhere from 7 to 12. In the NW we can mulch them well and they should survive.

  • Yolanda the heliotrope looks wonderful. However I want to know what you mean by Zone 9 and what kind of climatic zone system you are using. Because I realize the Columbia valley is simply too cold for these plants. The Sunset Western Garden book says that the coldest possible place for these plants is zone "15". This is the coast range of California and its northern extremity is Klamath.
