Build a Rocket Stove Step-by-Step. Building a rocket stove is quick and easy. You will need one #10 can and four small cans (soup, corn, beans, etc.). Seeing how to build a rocket stove is much easier then explaining the process in writing. I recommend watching the video and commenting if you have any questions. This is a great alternative heat source and cooking option for camping, emergency preparedness and to cook your food storage on. If you can cook it on a stove you can cook it on a rocket stove.

I understand ash works best as an insulator. Thanks for the recommendation.

I use it to keep the sand from spilling and to stabilize the inner can.

the airflow is more controlled/directional so it heats what you want it to

it also burns hotter because of this & the insulation so you need less wood there is not a lot of smoke either because you don't need more than several handfuls of twigs.

A rocket stove has two benefits. 1. cooks your food 2. keeps you warm. If you use vermiculite it would dissipate the heat too fast after the fire goes out. You need the thermal mass to remain hot long after the fire dies. The fire is going to cook your food at the same rate regardless what the stove is insulated with.

Okay, wonderful. How do you put a pan on top of this contraption without putting the fire out? Don't you need stand off's to hold the pan above the edge of the #10 can?

So how does the aluminum hold up to the flame? Wouldn't it burn through the aluminum?
