Passporters walked along the Gold Trail (Caminho de Ouro), a 1200km paved road built by African slaves during the gold rush of the 18th century. Deep in the rainforest of Paraty Brazil, this road was used to bring gold and precious stones out of the Brazilian interior and onto Portugal bound ships. We also visited a cachaça distillery to see how rum is made in the traditional way.
