It's so awesome I go there every summer

Lake Michigan is basically a sea. The only reason they call them lakes (The Great Lakes) is due to the lack of salt water. Of course there are exceptions outside the US like the Caspian Sea which is freshwater.

Oak Street is one of several Chicago beaches along Lake Michigan, which surprisingly resembles an ocean...in the middle of the country! Lake Michigan is only slightly smaller than the US state of West Virginia. When standing on the beach in Chicago it is impossible to see 307 miles (494 km) across the lake. There are reports that Lake Michigan is so large that if you stood on the moon, you could see the lake and recognize its familiar shape.
