Joplin MO monster tornado caught on tape, city lies in ruins

Rescue crews dug through piles of splintered houses and crushed cars on Monday in a search for victims of a half-mile-wide tornado that killed at least 116 people when it blasted much of this Missouri town off the map and slammed straight into its hospital. It was the nation's deadliest single twister in nearly 60 years and the second major tornado disaster in less than a month. Authorities feared the toll could rise as the full scope of the destruction comes into view: house after house reduced to slabs, cars crushed like soda cans, shaken residents roaming streets in search of missing family members.

Here is the honest reality. I live in Joplin, Have my whole life. Trust me! what you are seeing here is NOTHING compared to walking thru it first hand. I drive thru this shit every day and trust me I don't want to... but have to. and every day I wonder to myself, will I be able to make it thru this today without crying? usually the answer is no.

@jh4dc5s i had a portable radio tuned to nat weather serv springfield mo. "No tornadic activity expected with this system" This was brodcasted the entire time tornado was on the ground. Literally, almost to the second when it stopped NWS tone audible warning then brodcasted a tornado warning for jasper county! Doug Heady started warning about this around noon-ish. Like I said, just look at where it started and where it ended. Peoples need to wake up...

@jh4dc5s watched it from start to finish from a hill east side of town. ive got alot of experience with weather around the globe.and storm spotting local. this shit is wrong! landed on top of our doctors housing and stopped at the end of civilization on east side. little or no damage to free space on either end of town. just look how hard is was churning at east middle sch. then it shut off and hooked south. natural my ass! did you hear the national weather service brodcast during?

I live in Pittsburg, ks only 25 miles from Joplin. I drove through Joplin once I started school at Pitt and pictures don't show how devastating this tornado was. And for all of you saying god did this and bashing on Joplin with disrespect. This was an act of NATURE and the blame is solely put on nature. All of you heartless people should reevaluate your life or burn in hell forever. God bless Joplin and all those who lost their families and friends.

@renkar820 F-5 My man. I volunteered there and the damage is unbelievable. Video doesnt give justice. I saw many terrible things. To give an example of the power I saw a garden hose shoved through an 8 inch tree. I cant even imagine the power that would require. Ive heard some experts say the wind speed may have been over 300mph at some times.
