Guide For Mapping In HL2, Portal, L4D, TF2, GMod, CSS, The Ship, DOD:S, Postal 3, & More!

I recommend You Watch In High Quality.

Dozens of modders and official gaming companies use Source for their games and that doesn't mean you can't learn how to as well.

This is lesson one: Creating Brushes & Applying Textures.

Requirements for understanding this guide: You must have played a video game and you must own a source game (such as Left 4 Dead, Counter Strike, or any Orange Box game).

In this tutorial you will learn:
1: How to start up hammer,
2: How to create an object,
3: How to move your camera (Z key),
4: How to apply textures,
5: How to create a displacement,
6: How to create non-cube objects
7: How Ctrl + P Solves Problems
8: How Ctrl + T Defines Brushes

  • Hand tool is only for moving the whole map if you want to move the box use the pointer and drag it around on the grid don't drag it in 3D space.

Also to reshape it, look for the yellow cornered red outlined tool. This lets you reshape the box. Inverted shapes won't let your map render, though, so be careful.

Also to make really complex shapes, use more than one box.

  • umm can u respond because i cant make a map because i want to make a left 4 dead map BUT when i click on source SDK it only says half life 2 and orange box which i dont have so how am i suppose to make one if i cant click on it

  • @haltrix

You need to use the Left 4 Dead authoring tools to make Left 4 Dead maps now. It's just like hammer only with Left 4 Dead assets.

Good sir, do watch the video at 2:25 you'll see it clearly highlights the "Apply" button with a red box noting that this is the button to apply the texture.

  • @ianboswell No, he's right. What you demonstrate not only doesn't work, it's completely different from what other tutorials say. It's impossible to finish even a basic box when your instructions don't work.

  • how to open mdl files from psotal 3 ? what soft i need for that ?

Not gonna work for postal 3 for two reasons

    1) It's NEVER going to come out. Ever. Don't fight me with this.

    2) It doesn't have the same content as HL2 games, even though its on the same engine. Hammer doesn't support it's custom content. At least I think, honestly I'm talking out of my ass but I'm pretty sure I'm right about this.

  • hey how do i resert the hammer thing? my upper right box is anohter carmara and not the (top) box
