Without enough tonnage to run the trains separately, NS combined trains 221 & 173 on this day. The combo train was caught passing the Amtrak Station in Spartanburg, SC in May 1991. The train was headed by a former N&W SD40-2. Another former N&W SD40-2 followed, then a former Southern SD40-2. The three SD40-2 units would have been the power for 221 and the three trailing units would have been the power for 173 (along with the R/C boxcar). One of the old Southern "Tobacco barn" boxcars was in the consist.

@mpalm1990 That was a specially designed boxcar that Southern Railway used for transporting tobacco. It had round porthole windows along the top slanted edge of the car to provide some sunlight for the tobacco during transit. Later as tobacco shipments declined on the railroad, it was used in various types of service, including cottonseed shipments in the NS era. During this later era of the car, many of the porthole windows were closed with plate steel welded in the openings.
