The White Walkers, referred to as the Others in the books, are a mythological race mentioned in ancient legends and stories from the time of the First Men and the Children of the Forest. Eight thousand years before Robert's Rebellion, a winter known as the Long Night lasted a generation. In the darkness and cold of the Long Night, the White Walkers descended upon Westeros from the furthest north, the polar regions of the Lands of Always Winter. None knew why they came, but they killed all in their path, reanimating the dead as wights to kill the living at their command. {C}Eventually the peoples of Westeros rallied and in a conflict known as the War for the Dawn, the White Walkers were defeated and driven back into the uttermost north, with the Wall raised to bar their return. In the present day, most believe they never existed and are just the stuff of legends, and even the few who believe they did once exist think they went extinct thousands of years ago. Certainly, none has been seen for thousands of years.
According to legend, the White Walkers speak a language known in myth as "Skroth".

While held as myths and spoken of in the same breath as ghosts, goblins, "Grumkins and Snarks", there is a growing belief amongst the wildlings who live beyond the Wall that the White Walkers have returned.

"In that darkness the White Walkers came for the first time. They swept through cities and kingdoms, riding their dead horses, hunting with their packs of pale spiders big as hounds."
―Old Nan

    2) The Others allowed the runaway to go so that he can tell the world about their coming. In a way it's like a boastful "we have arrived, bitch" moment. The Others also don't feed on humans, they're not zombies....they just kill anything and everything that has the warmth of life in it and we don't know what for as yet.

    1) I would think he already knew that he would never be able to outrun them, seeing that they were so close already, in such an environment (where you can hardly hid) he was trying to hid as best as he could

    2) As somebody else has mentioned here, in the first episode of season one, one man (the runaway from the nightwatch who is later executed) also was not killed by them, no reason for this was given for this, maybe they had already "fed" and he was of no importance to them?

no, why on earth you think it's something in his blood...

it's most likely the obsidian he's carrying or that he's just a weak soft heart. The very first scene of the show (and prologue of the book), that one pansy guy is also survives, so it seems like the white walkers can see who's a threat or not. (but then again, i think they kill women and children so i dunno about that theory).

I guess Sam has a special relationship with the white walker, such as something in blood.

With winter coming I bet we're going to see way more White Walkers invading the south, more than what has been shown either in the books or the series to date.
