@rosselliot San Sai is in Chiang Mai province only a fews km from Chiang Mai city. so yes it is still in chiang mai.

So this is not actually in Chiang Mai? I'm planning a trip this year to see this festival - what's the best place to see and partake in the lanterns? Any advice?

theres soo much that could go wrong, but luckily nothing did.

@hitmenrev Yes, they did. That was the only thing I was sketched about it. As well as the dripping wax from the sky.

No, this isn't in Chiang Mai. I'll clarify something first -- this is not technically Loy Kratong. This northern holiday is called Yi Peng and it just happens to fall at the same time period. So, you can see them release lanterns all over the CM area, but the place I went to here (and I recommend it because it's the biggest I've seen!) is in the San Sai district near Maejo University. Just bring that information to a tourist agent or those big red truck/taxis and they can get you there.

I don't know-- there might be somewhere. These lantern festivals come around a few times a year but this is by far the biggest one I've ever seen.
