These were rejected young people who needed someone to look up to, and to look after them in a VERY turbulent time, and Manson, who was twice their age, manipulated them into killing for him. He controlled them. He brainwashed them.

If you weren't around in the 60s or 70s, you can't know what a rough time that was for people. Young people were looking for a savior, and Charlie lied and told them he was that savior-- And all they'd have to do is kill for his love.
