This is the wooden lock and key I had to make for my Engineering Class. Basically, it's 3 weeks of work and a lot of bandsaw/belt sander usage. Looks simple, but the tolerances and moving pieces were a pain in the butt.

  • the use of the extra moving part in the middle to hide the obious string used to pull it back is clever... i give it a 4/5 for creativity and a good contruction

  • Um, there's no string. The thing in the middle is a tumbler, keeping the sliding part from moving unless the key is turned, lifting the tumbler, and then letting the key move the slider. No string, I promise!

  • hours of fun right there.

  • @Rswipeable it is not for your amusement. you can't have it.

  • ...cool, my kinda stuff. : )

  • useless...

  • Did you have to make it in wood?

  • it's not really a toy, but i rather like it

    nice simple little thing

  • @jzzsxm its like the commonly used bolt locks on apartment building doors :)

  • to all those people saying "is this even a toy?"

well.... most toy are just inanimate objects that don't do anything, and most other toys are representative of some real object but scaled down or simplified... so yeah, this is a toy. why not? it looks cool, seems robust and is kinda fun.
