Now, another old PS1 game, Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver, Released in 1999 by Crystal Dynamics and Eidos. My first SR tribute video got taken down cos of copyright. Lets hope this one fares better..
Soul Reaver takes place within the fictional world of Nosgoth, where the health of the land is tied to the nine Pillars of Nosgoth, and each pillar in turn is represented by a guardian. Prior to the events of Soul Reaver, the guardians became corrupted, and the vampire Kain killed eight of the guardians and discovered he was the final one. Refusing to sacrifice himself to restore the Pillars, he doomed Nosgoth to eternal corruption and decay and proceeded to raise his vampire lieutenants (Raziel, Dumah, Turel, Rahab, Zephon and Melchiah) and besiege the land. By the time of Soul Reaver's introduction, the humans have largely been decimated and the vampires have each laid claim to a region of Nosgoth and turned their attention to internal matters. Unknown to the vampires, beneath Nosgoth there lurks The Elder God, an ancient and powerful entity. The Elder God controls the Wheel of Fate, a cycle of reincarnation of souls that circle the Wheel in a loop of predestination. However, because vampires are immortal, their souls do not spin with the Wheel and this causes the land to decay as the Wheel stalls. Every few years one of the lieutenants would enter into an evolutionary phase and emerge with a new physical attribute or gift. One fateful day, The protagonist, Raziel, surpassed kain by evolving with a set of bat-like wings. Filled with jealous hate, Kain tears the bones from his wings and has him tossed into the lake of the dead to burn eternally, an order which his brothers make no attempt to argue. Raziel burns for hundreds of years until a mysterious entity, the Elder God, resurrects Raziel as a disfigured wraith. The God had seen the potential in Raziel, and his hate for Kain and his brothers. He tells Raziel that he is to kill kain and his brothers, and let the wheel of fate turn once again. Raziel agrees almost without hesitation. However, he finds that the years evolving have rendered the land ruined and his brothers, hideous (yet powerful) mostrosities, each with a nest of equally appalling monstrous vampires. Raziel hunts down his brothers and kills them all, with the exception of Turel (whose absence is explained later in the series), although Turels clan still exist, under the command of a lesser vampire, Morlock. Melchiah has become a hideous sack of rotting flesh, constantly needing to skin humans and wear their skin to sustain his own life; Zephon has become a huge insect, and his body has merged with the pinnacle of a cathedral that once served as a symbol of resistance against the vampires; Rahab has evolved a natural resistance to waters deadly effects and inhabits a partially underwater abbey, now resembling a dog like creature with a fishs tail; Dumah has evolved to become an almost unstoppable juggernaught and can absorb the souls of anyone even while they live; and Turel is seen later in the series as an enormous bat-like creature. As each brother is killed, Raziel comes closer to finding out where Kain is and absorbs a new power from his dead brothers souls; Melchiah is crushed with a large meat grinder, and gives Raziel the ability to shift through some walls; Zephon is burned alive with a flaming vampire egg and gives Raziel the ability to climb certain walls; Morlock gives Raziel telekinetic powers, and can be killed just like any normal Vampire; Rahabs lair is flooded with sunlight and he burns to death, giving Raziel the ability to swim; and Dumah is lured into an ancient furnace, giving Raziel the ability to extract the souls of still living vampires. As Raziel progresses, certain revelations are revealed to him; the reason for the lands ruin, to which he had been ignorant; The execution of his own clan of vampires; the humans existence trapped alive within their ruined citadel; and most shockingly, Raziel discovers a series of coffins for members of the Sarafan, an elite tribe of vampire hunters that had been killed off centuries before Kain's rule. To Raziel's horror, the names in the crypt are those of him and his brothers: in life, Kain's vampire lieutenants had been vampire hunters, and he chose the Sarafan to serve him as a cruel irony. Armed with this knowledge, he proceeds to the lair of Mobeus the timestreamer (an antagonist in the previous game, Blood Omen). In the oracle caves, he finally discovers Kain, and the two battle. Kain, unfazed by Raziel, activates the chronoplast, a gateway into the past, and escapes through it. Raziel follows. He lands in a mysterious land long ago, and is greeted by Moebius in a shocking cliffhanger ending which Soul Reaver 2 picks up on directly.
