From Handel's witty opera, "Agrippina": French soprano Véronique Gens as Agrippina sings with her usual elegance in this whimsical staging. This delightful song of joy comes from Agrippina having just extracted a hurried promise from husband Emperor Claudio (Claudius) to pass on the laurel crown to her son, Nerone (Nero).

With Jean-Claude Malgoire directing Le Grande Ecurie et la Chambre du Roy.

Recorded at the Théâtre Municipal, Tourcoing, France, March 2003.

  • Hey this is from an earlier cantata like most arias in Agrippina. It's from Aminta e Fillide :)

  • Yep, Handel recycled some old oratorio tunes for this one, as he did for his other, later works. He can't really sue himself for copyright violations, eh? (Not that the concept even existed then, and everyone 'borrowed' from everyone else, including Bach - esp. from himself - and it didn't seem to be a big deal.)

  • Duh! What made me put Mozart? It's Handel of course.

Anyway, gives me a chance to thank mariandelochs for posting this witty, very enjoyable clip.

  • Hee, easy enough mistake to make ! ;) And 'tis my pleasure, dear jabberwock01, to share such lovely music with everyone - you're welcome.

  • Magloire as director...lovley like always :D

Very, very nice....Thank you for posting this aria here ;)

  • You're very welcome!

  • The one from René Jacobs is to be viewed on our channel

  • She seems a bit way too happy...it's like she's planning something o.O

  • Hooty, typical of all singers today. Listen to Conchita Supervia for spontaneity, the mark of great singers

  • un po' sguaiatella ogni tanto....ma comunque ben ! :-D

  • :D Yes, this is not true a 17th or 18th century costume (the bodice and poofed petticoat is, loosely, more like an 18th century ensemble, but it looks like they tried getting one of those late 17th/early 18th century high rise hairdos). And a lady would have been careful not to let her shift, AKA "underwear" to slide off her shoulders like that, especially under her other clothes. But I think the ensemble is awesome anyways, and her singing is so excellent it almost enhances it. :)

  • Eine der früheren Opern Händels und definitiv eine der besten. Und diese Arie ist eine der besten von Agrippina. Wunderschön.

  • One of Handel's best operas! Love it!

  • excuse-moi, je voulais dire chant est magnifique

  • une grande performance! je aimé il. je penser est merveilleux
