A few things I forgot to discuss in the vid:

1. You have to heat thick linoleum before you can cut it with scissors. Just put it in the oven for about 3 minutes at 170 degrees Fahrenheit. If you try to cut it cold, it will break.

2. The horse figure will have a tendency to topple when there is no infantryman "rider" placed on it. This should seldom be a problem unless you need to use unmounted horses. If it is a problem, just weight the side opposite the horse in some way, or use a square of metal or magnetic card instead of vinyl-cardboard for the base.

3. Mount the horse on a 'backwards L', as the horse faces forward. This is more realistic, as men walk horses with the horse on their right side.

4. Viking Forge website. http://www.thevikingforge.net/

5. If you find the minis a little too difficult to move this way, use a little bit of blu tak http://www.blutack.com/ to temporarily adhere the figure to his mount.

6. For those who would like 25mm horses, in a more expensive but not time intensive way, check these out: http://stuffershack.com/store/horse-minis/ They look nice, IMO, and they would certainly work. The only quip (other than the price, $4 a horse!) I would have is that none of them appear to have saddles and bridles. This would work for a fantasy mount, I suppose, though not for anything historical, except maybe very early Plains Indians.

  • If you want to avoid the oven, you can also just score the tile with a razor knife and a srtraight edge and it will break along the score.

  • @tmaharris That is something I've always been scared to try, but if it works, cool!

  • Nice tip - much appreciated

  • @Araneas181 Thanks! I hope some folks will find it useful.

  • Clever idea. I guess you could also use this along with some loose cannon to represent horse artillery.
