As Oscar excitment builds in Hollywood where the annual event is set to take place on Sunday, many people are speculating what is in store for this year's awards ceremony.

Avatar, which has raked in more than $2.5 billion in ticket sales worldwide making it the highest-grossing film of all time, is a contender for several honors including the coveted best picture and best director awards.

Al Jazeera's Cath Turner reports on how its success has rival studios scrambling to cash in on the 3D phenomenon.

  • i love avatar

  • i so love this movie!!!!!

  • great animation .. =)

  • @metafixi I agree. Although the story in Avatar was used before, its HOW it was presented. I loved Avatar. I respect people opinions, but I hate how they just rant on how it sucks. Their just trying to be different.

  • @toyshankemo2

also, the only oscar this massive overblown overbudgeted multimillion dollar bowel movement abortion of a movie received was for art. ART. thats all. everything else was shit and the fact that it looked pretty comes nowhere AT ALL near scratching the surface of the giant frozen shitpickle that is avatar.

also, i think the reason cameron waited ten years to birth this fracas is because last decades young peolpe had taste (and ferngully, which this move is a ripoff of)

the ONLY redeeming factor about this movie is the exquisite animation and art - and only in the delivery, not the design. as ive said before the overall aesthetic is kitsch, but it is kitsch done beautifully.

    no points for acting.

    no points for directing.

    no points to writing.

    no points for storytelling.

ALL POINTS to 3D animators and artists (assuming they were merely doing what they were told, and werent responsible for the pisspoor creative direction.)

visionary? the entire theme has been done to death 1000 times, and is too kitsch to have even been nominated for an award. lets go over a few of these "visionary" elements in the movie. . .unobtanium? is that toungue in cheek? pandora? so aliens knw greek mythology. . . guess it kinda makes sense since theyre fucking NATIVE AMERICANS with sex hair.

there was nothing visionary about this movie. at all. i cant believe it took ten years for him to finally drop this turd.

  • @DazmoTube hyped up bro? i'm an avid movie watcher and i saw short avatar trailers about only about two weeks before the movie came out, whereas most movies trailers at months at norm and possibly even a year. yes avatar was an expensive investment but to the artistry, thought, and complete visionary of the director is incredible. you yourself is being a full on hard-headed douchebag by reject other's opinions. keep in mind the script was being written since the mid 90's.

  • Hurt Locker is propaganda !

  • I really think Hurt Locker was a good movie but nothing compared to Avatar... Hurt Locker has a monotone type of song and it was repeated a lot plus it concentrates on a life of a soldier.... The theme has been seen before so many times... whereas Avatar is more open-minded... it covers more ground when it comes to how several different type of ppl behave... it's really entertaining and the imagination behind is really out there.... It truly is something new and creative
