Freaks is a cult classic because they used real Freaks and midgets as the actors, showing how they lived day to day, and their peculiar abilities in a sideshow storyline. It also makes you feel sad for what their lives must have been like, to be used and abused for money. Many actually worked at Coney Island like the Pinheads, & became famous because of this film. This is a truly fascinating oddity , and a memorable if unnerving experience.

Love this film soooooo much, definately one of my all-time favourites :) I have watched as many horror films as you can imagine and the ending of this film creeps me out everytime! This film is a piece of art- yes, it was banned for a long time (until the 1960s) and yes, it is seen by many as exploitation. But it is still a classic piece of cinema. Infact I just wrote about this for a piece of uni work, I just couldn't resist writing about one of my fav films :)

What I said about this film is my personal opinion. Read Leonard Maltin's movie guide or any other to see that this is considered a classic. Just because you don't understand it, or don't like it, doesn't make it any less a classic. The fact it mostly uses real freaks, makes it more of a horror movie in the true sense, because the actors are not in fake monster suits. It couldn't be made today because very few real freaks still exist, or want to be exploited. It has some very tender moments.

@rossstuart100 Um .... how is it not a horror movie? It's about mistreatment of people with deformities, and at the end there is a vicious attack on Cleopatra. How is it NOT a horror movie?!
