cleaning up 3408cat engine sleeves..engine was flowded with water so there was some rust..i am trying to see if they can be reused. i am using stones with petrol to clean them.

  • and the engine you are talking about is not a v8 or a v12, and not a 4 stroke . its not even in the same class to compare it with the 3400 series, the 3400 is "huge" if compared with all other vechicle engines that you will ever seen in the road.ok?

  • if you were an engine tech you would know that theoreticaly the cylinder becames oval from the movement of the piston from the moment it starts working for the first time.the 3408 (thats a sleeve from a 3412 actualy i said that), is a mid size diesel engine, still its huge in compared to the 1.6L-2.0L engines found in most cars,anyways i dont think youre ever going to see that 2300 tone engine unless you are a mechanic in the worlds biggest freight ship,

  • the roundness tolerance is 0.028mm on 3400series engines. the largest diesel engine ever built weights about 2300 tonnes so dont go telling a 3408cat is "HUGE".

    oh and btw i'm a cat engine tech and the admin of a cat engine testcell...

  • sorry i deleted your comment , i justed tryed to hit reply fast and it looks like a deleted it by mistake. anyways i am not much of a measuring tolerances guy,and again i can be the one mistaken about the 0.28mm or 0.028mm thing.s

  • oh i see what you mean, but it wasnt clumbed that tight, in fact the vicebentch was bearly holding the sleeve, again these sleeves have a wall of 10-15mm thickness which i doubt that can be damaged my just bearly holding the sleeve in the vicebentch as i said. i dont know where you figured out that "0.028mm" number.maybe you meant 0.28mm.still i say again that , these are HUGE engines, so they have bigger tolerance than car engines ,thus different restoration/repair techniques.anyways thnks

  • i dont quite understand what you are saying cause my english isnt too good. but using the stones (for just a few seconds) while having lubricated the sleeve with oil,isnt going to make much of a difference in the tolerance. ive seen that done in car engine blocks, besides what i did was -cleaning- so that we could see how far the rust had gone in the cylinder walls, they sure looked like new when i cleaned them but they ended up in the junkyeard.

  • you seriously think the roundness of the liner remains within the tolerance after clamping it in a wice?

  • besides if you did read the title more carefully it says " for inspection" ..we were going to inspect them and check their tolerance to make sure it met the factory standards before puting the engine back together.

  • you obviously dont know shit about these engines,the tolerance in these engines allows you to clean up the sleeves from rust just as i did. i lubricated the stones and used an air pressure regulator,it was a long shot if i even saved one of the 12 sleeves. the customer wanted to use the same sleeves and pistons with just new piston rings, but the thing is that both sleeves and pistons are too cheap for that 3412 so we used new, thanks for your good comment though,
