Phil Lynott intervenes to stop what could of turned out to be a total disaster at the Glasgow Apollo on 19 Mar 1983. Lynott wants the crowd to come down toward the front of the stage, which is an area security wanted to keep off limits. When people began to cross the barracade, bouncers started to intervene violently, causing Phil to stop the song and force the bouncers to let the crowd down to the front. The song, and show, continued without further incident.

Oddly enough, this show was recorded and appears as an edited down FM broadcast, commonly referred to as "Alibi". This incident was edited out of "Alibi", along with several other songs played at the show. This is taken from one of the audience recordings that exist of the show.

Axl Rose could learn a thing or two from how Lynott handles this. Lynott didn't have to pause the show long, the band kept playing, and it didn't turn into a 10 minute speech. Well done.

Enjoy!

  • Thanks Blacksabfan! You´re are a legend for bringing lizzy gems to you-tube. Thanks again!

Aside this I wish that one day some technical interested Lizzy-Freaks will re-record some bootlegs. It is obvious that certain bootlegs offer a wrong speed. I do not! refer to the well known "adrenalin-effect" when playing live. No: the music on some bootlegs is too fast & seems also to high in pitch if you refer to Phil´s Voice, the guitar-tunings etc.

  • Yes, I agree that this is a little fast. Although I've heard quite a bit worse. Lizzy's last show at Nuremberg was horribly fast when I received it. I couldn't even stand to listen to it because it was so unrealistic. I fixed it using Audacity and uploaded the speed corrected Nuremberg up at G101. It still might not be perfect because I went by ear, but it's a major improvement. I also know that the Ipswich show runs a little fast, as does the second Greedies show.

  • I could attempt to fix all the shows I have, but that would be a very time-consuming project. Some of the shows don't have that great of sound anyway (the Greedies show comes to mind) so I just tolerate the speed. Part of it is because these tapes over time have degenerated, and that's why you get speed and pitch problems. Some purists (believe it or not) feel it's wrong to mess around with the recordings digitally. I personally don't care either way.

  • Phil will be forever a legend. The music will never die, and I'd like to think he's playing bass in a band formed of Freddie Mercury, Jimi Hendrix and Keith Moon. Thats why we get so many thunderstorms, those guys up their playing away! R.I.P Phil!!! :D

  • I think the band lost it´s soul when Sykes join. No feeling at all.

  • Thanks for the comments. I've just viewed the message I placed. 2 spelling mistakes. Sorry guys, I was nightshift and being tired is my only excuse.

  • I wasnt there ! !

  • Rip the audio from this song at thetunify doht cohm.

  • phil is a fukin legend for doin that ha ha come a little closer , come a little closer lol

  • Yeah tempo is much quicker, but tight. Sykes solo in great and the energy is high. Better then many of there 83' show some of which were off. Never really like the keyboard background in Jail Break for the later line up. Darrell can be annoying.

  • I always loved the way people like Phil and Ian Gillan were always able to deal with bouncers giving the crowd a hard time, class acts both of them.

  • @smudgerbuster Would this be the Manchester Apollo? If so I know exactly what you mean. I was at 1 gig next to 2 fans, both well over 6ft tall. 2 bouncers barged along the row to drag these 2 fans off the seats, only to leave very sheepishly once they realised the 2 fans weren't stood on the seats.

  • @burkezillar

How true. Just think of all the great gigs we'll be watching when we get upstairs.

  • And really.. What could a few bouncers do to a crowd that wants to see their favorite band up close.. :) The crowd does what it wants. RIP Phil.

  • great band!

  • This was fucking awesome!!!!!It kills me to hear Lizzy like this. I was only 5 when phil died so sadly I'll never get to see him live. :(..... God luv ya phil! I know I do.

  • I miss Phil................

  • That's awesome, Ian! Nice to get an actual play-by-play of what's happening. Very cool!

  • Phil is King of the whole rock scene from 1970 til now, if you ask me!!

Rock on Phil, bless you man!!

  • I was at this gig and lucky to be near the front. The bouncers at the Appollo were notoriously violent. When you her Phil saying " LEAVE HIM ALONE " it was for one poor guy who was wearing a leather glove with studs in it ( like Phil's ) who tried to get to the front. The bouncer grabbed this guy and rag dolled him all over the place. The brute in a suit eventually let the guy go. The whole place went ballistic !. What a gig, what a memory, what a band.

  • You think Axl would have acted a little more like Philo seeing as he had a "Black Rose" tattoo dedicated to Phil.

  • aww... the apollo......

  • This was the only time i caught Lizzy and the only time i remember the Apollo allowing standing room only! There must have been about 5,000 in that night, what a gig!!
