I never read this as a kid. I read it at a baby shower where those invited were asked to give their favorite kid book as a gift to start the baby's library. I read this out loud at the shower and cried. I'm a softy.

Oh, God, the guilt is crippling. See, this just takes the fight right out of me. A lifetime of reading horror & sci-fi, all manner of macabre things I know and love...and then this, my fav book as a kid. What happened?

This is a beautiful story. I remembered reading this back in elementary school. I had to read it to a group of toddlers and it definately felt special.
