The Physioball Russian Twist is an excellent functional activity that can be incorporated into any physical regimen. The movement pattern essentially replicates other fundamental trunk rotation exercises, but the stability, coordination and balance needed to execute this variation is further challenging. With proper form, the participant can experience increased strength, endurance, and functional ROM of the trunk rotators, improved recruitment and function of deep trunk stabilizers, as well as improved postural control and overall proprioceptive function.

Due to the fact that the load is accelerated across gravity for a segment of the movement pattern, the exercise does not function to maximize time under tension for hypertrophic effects such as a cable rotation or chop; but the movement promotes a full rotational ROM with synchronized stabilizer activation if performed properly, and provides for a unique acceleration/deceleration challenge based on the unstable surface and non-traditional body positioning employed.
