  • how do you get that chatter, i have a rover 200 with t16 in with a blow off valve but it does not chatter!

  • its an adjustable bolt on dump valve from motor build. literally bolts straight on the turbo.

  • nice m8 owe did the conversion go i want to do it to mine?

  • i bought the car like it but since ive had it ive basicaly redone the whole engine as it was bodged from the start.

  • That noise is not the wastegate OR the dump valve. It is your dump valve malfunctioning and not opening, the result is the air goes back out the intake and makes the fluttering noise.

  • Is that not compressor surge?

  • That's not waste gate chatter. That's just air blowing back over the compressor in the turbo. It's also not really realted to the DV. It's just that you can hear it when you remove the OEM airbox. If anything a good DV will stop this noise and you'll just get a single Tishhhhh. The best way to get this noise is by blanking your DV/re-circ valve off all together. It also sounds more prominent with a larger inter-cooler.

  • @Halomk5

No disrespect, but youve just made yourself look extremely silly. Youve just said what ive said , that a dumpvalve releases pressurised air trapped in the pre-throttle intake system, and then said 'this is where the wastegate comes in', and not said anything about it. You're aware that a dumpvalve and a wastegate are two entirely different things, on two entirely different sides of the intake/exhaust set up right?

  • Dude, you're wrong there about wastegates. When the turbo spins up it forces air through the throttle body, but during gear change the throttle shuts which causes a build up of trapped air which will try to escape back through the air filter. This is where a wastegates comes in, a dump valve allows that trapped air to escape from outside the throttle body and allow more air to be drawn in when the throttle reopens. xD

  • There is no such thing as wategate chatter. All a wastegate does is vent unwated exhaust gasses away from the turbine so as not to over boost the engine. The noise as has been said, is when a dumpvalve isnt functioning properly, or isnt present at all. The noise is the pressurised air trying to escape the only way it can when the throttle shuts...back over the forward spinning impellar blades.

  • Sounds awesome!! T16 ftw, I have the regular forge one on mine and fancy a change.

  • how can i get the wastegate chatter on a 1.8t mk4 golf?

  • That's not the dump valve or the wastegate making that sound.

What's happening is the spring in the dump valve is too strong and isn't opening to release the pressure in the inlet.

When you come off the throttle, the air is being forced back through the turbo compressor which chops it up as the air passes through.

    Search for 'compressor stall'.

Nice sound though! I always seem to keep reverting back to compressor stall on mine.

  • cheers mate!
